My favorite drive to Utah Lake

One of the best ways to take in Utah Lake is to get a front row seat. One of the best ways to do that is driving alongside, up to, or nearby its massive shoreline.

Take, for example, Highways 68 from the west side of the lake. It affords a vantage point of the lake that few are ever exposed to.  And it’s a great way to disorient your eyes and see something new.

But my absolute favorite drive to Utah Lake would have to be the Provo Airport Dyke at sunset. Chris Keleher of the Utah Department of Natural Resources calls the view “spectacular” and “one of the best lookouts of the lake.”

That’s an understatement. The Provo Airport Dyke road is breathtaking, at least it is for a romantic, landscape-loving fool like myself. I like to drive it a few times a year, at least once during each season. It serves as a visual reminder of annual changes, and looks different yet the same every time I see it. Call it comfort scenery.

So if you haven’t already, head west on Provo Center Street, then turn south on the little access road just before you cross the Provo River bridge that heads into Utah Lake State Park. Your body and soul will thank you for it. And it makes for a great activity or getaway for couples or the whole family.
