For most area residents, Utah Lake is in their backyard. So you won’t get many style or exotic points for skiing there.
What you will get, however, is access to glass-like water at all hours of the day and less travel, says Mel Smith of the Utah Water Ski Club.
“Why ski Utah Lake in light of others? Because it’s very close and offers protected areas from wind and other boaters in Provo Bay,” he says.
Unlike other water sports, slalom skiing requires smooth water, Smith says, “Which is very hard to find on most Utah reservoirs and lakes unless you ski first thing in the morning.” That said, “Utah Lake has smooth water in the middle of the day for much of the summer.”
In addition to slalom skiers, boarders hoping to avoid a bumpy ride without having to wake up early should also be pleased.
Tubers looking for choppy waters? Not so much, but there are wakes for that.
