Mother of five runs across frozen Utah Lake

Arianne Brown of Provo isn’t your typical mother. She has five young children who are extra wiggly during indoor winters, as any parent knows. And she is quite the busy body herself.

What does she do to combat cabin fever during winter months?

For one thing, she ran across a frozen Utah Lake for the first time last month. Taking inspiration from our winter wonderland story and another ice runner we profiled last year, Brown and a group of friends ran a total of 14 miles from Provo Harbor to Saratoga Springs and back. The temperature reading: 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Must have been miserable, right? Quite the opposite. “Never has 14 miles ever felt so good,” Brown writes on her blog.

In addition to following ice safety tips, Brown and her friends used screw shoes to prevent slipping and GPS to help them reach their destination.

“As we exited the ice, we looked to our right and saw a bunch of people who were finishing a 5k race with a polar plunge into the water,” Brown says. “‘Those people are nuts!,’ I said to myself. Then I figured they were probably thinking the same thing about us.”

Thanks for sharing your experience, Arianne.
