With the publicity that Utah Lake has had over the past few weeks, some of you might be wondering what you can do to help make Utah Lake a better place. A recent editorial in the Daily Herald encouraged anyone who is interested in helping to contact us. Ultimately, funding for improvement projects is the main thing that is needed. With more funds available, we will be able to expedite and improve the carp and phragmites removal projects that are currently underway. The best way that you can help is to contact your elected representatives, both at the city and state levels, and express your desire to see more funding go towards Utah Lake improvement projects. Go to your city’s website to find contact information for city officials. This map is very helpful if you don’t know who your state legislators are. Just find your house on the map, click on it, and you will see who they are. Here is a sample letter that you could write to an elected representative. Keep in mind that this is just a sample and you should definitely personalize it if you want to use it as a base for your own letter.
Additionally, here are some simple things that you can do to help improve the lake:
- Bring some gloves and a trash bag to any of the public access points and pick up some garbage.
- When you visit the lake, always try to leave it cleaner than you found it.
- Follow us on social media to stay up to date on all things regarding Utah Lake. We are on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (@utahlake). Help by sharing, liking, and commenting on posts that you like.
- When you visit the lake, be sure to take some pictures and share them on social media by using #utahlake. This will help people notice the beauty and the potential of the lake.
- Remember that there are things to do at Utah Lake year round, even in the winter.
- Mark your calendars for next year’s Utah Lake Festival (6/6/2015). The annual festival is the biggest event at the lake and it is when many of the improvement projects are highlighted.
