Utah Lake Picture of the Week

We have seen a lot of interest in our 10 Historic Utah Lake Photographs article that we posted last week. The Slide at Geneva Resort (pictured above) was the most popular photo based on the voting. For more information on the history of that slide and the lake, take a look at our previous article. We will be posting one new historic photo every Monday through the end of August. Starting in September, we will post pictures from this year’s photo exhibit each week. Here is this week’s historic photograph:

8/18/2014 – Sea Scouts

During the 1930s, scout leaders organized a troop of sea scouts in Utah Valley. In addition to swimming and fishing in Utah Lake, these boys learned nautical skills as they sailed on a boat they helped troop leaders build. Text taken from Utah Lake: Legacy. Photo courtesy of McKay Andreasen.

8/11/2014 – Geneva Steel

This steel mill was constructed on the shores of Utah Lake during the 1940’s. It was an ideal location because it wasn’t too far from important minerals such as iron, coal, and limestone that were necessary to keep the plant in operation. Also, it was far away from the West Coast, making it a difficult target for the Japanese to attack during WWII. Geneva Steel shut down permanently in November 2002. 8/4/2014 – Dancing Pavilion at Utah Lake

This pavilion at Utah Lake was used for dances during a time when several resorts were located along the lake’s shores. This photograph was most likely taken between 1900 and 1910. Photo Courtesy of the Utah State Historical Society.

Isn’t it amazing how much Utah County has changed over the last 85 years?  A view from the same spot will look much different today. Some things about the lake have changed but it is still the main geographical feature of the view looking to the west. The lake has always been an important part of Utah County’s culture. Can you see what used to be located where your home is today? Click on the image to see a bigger version. Photo Courtesy of the Utah State Historical Society.

Below is each part of the panoramic individually. Depending on the size of your computer screen, looking at them individually might be better.
